Horseback riding is a time when I can clear my head and focus. It is not lost on me the privilege of riding and handling such a beautiful animal. Coming from a family of equestrians who ride “rain or shine”, weather is not a deterrent to time in the saddle but to keep enjoyable, good equipment and gear is a must. I also have the benefit of two horse showing sisters who know about all the latest in summer equestrian style! (Thanks S + M!). Here are some recommendations for the latest summer horseback riding essentials:
ONE / KERRIT’S ICE FIL FULL SEAT TECH TIGHT OR ARIAT TRI-FACTOR BREECHES
The fabric of these tights can lower skin temperature up to five degrees and SPF protection. The gray, black, and tan colors are very nice. Also, reviews suggest these are the coolest breeches on the market and they have a nice phone pocket. You can find these breeches here or here.
Alternatively, I am a big fan of any Ariat products. Check out the Ariat Tri-Factor Breeches, light and cool, and a more flattering alternative to tights. I am eyeing the navy and khaki colors.
TWO / ARIAT SUNSTOPPER SHIRT
These shirts are the best! This popular shirt is back with more cute prints. I have blogged about these shirts before as they are cool, comfortable, stylish, and offer sun protection while in the saddle. I especially like this version in a bridle print pattern.
Another option: these sun sleeves which offer sun protection (UPF 50) but one can pair with any polo shirt.
THREE / VENTILATED HELMET
Look for a helmet with ventilation to keep you cool. I am a fan of the Charles Owen brand and have this helmet.
FOUR / VENTILATED GLOVES
Consider mesh backed gloves like these. I also have these as I am a fan of the argyle pattern. That said, some equestrians feel that the mesh provides for too much sun exposure.
FIVE / TACK CLEANING SUPPLIES
With the heat and more horse sweat, I tend to clean my equipment more often. I am a fan of the Effax brand. I use this Lederbalsam and this oil. The Lederbalsam, with its combo of beeswax and avocado oil, rejuvenates tack.
SIX / FLY SPRAY
While an obvious point, bug control is a must to keep your horse happy and healthy during the summer months. There are a number of fly control options, including natural based. I am currently using this sweat-resistant one, which claims to repel ticks and include sunscreen.
Alternatively, if you prefer non-chemical fly spray try this one. The information claims that it uses proprietary natural occurring fatty acids to deter insects from your horse.
SEVEN / LIGHTWEIGHT HALF CHAPS
While I have not tried these yet, the Ariat Ascent Half Chaps look to be a lightweight and breathable alternative for summer schooling.
SEVEN / RIATA DESIGNS HAT
This is the perfect elegant horse show hat – adorned with a gold horse shoe, brass zipper, and simulated pearl. I am also a fan of the jacquard pattern.
EIGHT / SUMMER SHOW COAT
For horse showing, this lovely show coat, which comes in black and navy, as well. This coat is breathable and flattering. According to sources, this blue is the latest color for the jumper ring—go with more traditional colors for the hunter or equitation rings.
NINE / MORE FOR YOUR HORSE
Saratoga Horseworks has this custom quarter mesh sheet to keep horse flies from biting. Lots of colors to choose from to personalize but keep in mind ordering + shipping may take 2-3 weeks.
Also, the EcoGold XC Saddle Pad, marketed as the top eventing pad but very breathable and secure for every day summer schooling.
Thanks for stopping by and happy riding, X.
