The 4-H motto: “to make the best better.” Head, heart, hands, and health. I had the pleasure of taking my son to the same annual agricultural fair that I showed my horses, chickens, and rabbits in growing up. I am so grateful for an upbringing filled with animals and organizations such as 4-H and Pony Club. Such activities greatly impacted my life in an amazing way, as well as who I am as I person today. There is a peace and joy in working with animals, as well as hard work and dedication. Despite the fact that many years had passed since I was an exhibitor in the fair, little had changed. I watched as the 4-H’ers were diligently taking care of their animals in the same white barns, showing them in the same pavilions or arenas, or prepping them for show or cooling out in the same wash barns. The airy white barns, of course, full of fans to keep the animals cool in the August summer heat. I made sure to point out the Speckled Sussex chickens and Netherland Dwarf rabbits, my breeds of choice. We happened to see the horse gymkhana in full swing, as well.
